Ukrainian nationals will now be eligible for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), according to a statement by U.S. secretary of homeland security Alejandro Mayorkas. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement in early March designating Ukraine for TPS for 18 months on the basis of ongoing armed conflict in the country brought about by the recent Russian invasion. “Russia’s premeditated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has resulted in an ongoing war, senseless violence, and Ukrainians forced to seek refuge in other countries,” Mayorkas is quoted as saying in the statement, promising to offer “support and protection to Ukrainian nationals in the United States.” Only those who have “continuously resided” in the U.S. since March 1, 2022, will be eligible for TPS under this designation. According to the statement, “individuals who attempt to travel to the United States after March 1, 2022 will not be eligible for TPS.” The decision comes after advocates and rights groups’ calls on President Joe Biden’s administration to protect Ukrainians in the U.S. from deportation. The Migration Policy Institute estimated that 30,000 Ukrainians currently in the U.S. on various visas are eligible.
