In a shift all too reminiscent of the days of March 2020, the recently discovered Omicron variant of COVID-19 has placed a sudden halt on seemingly all elements of daily life. One of them, of course, is travel. As of Dec. 17, the CDC’s travel guides have been updated to reflect precautions in light of the new variant. Here’s what you need to know from that statement. A negative viral test (PCR) is required no more than one day before entering the United States, “regardless of vaccination status or citizenship.” Those who recently recovered from COVID-19 may instead show proof of recover by means of both a positive viral test result no more than 90 days old and a letter from a healthcare provider. The White House outlined steps toward combating spread of the variant, including public education initiatives encouraging vaccination boosters and a rapid-response task force to prepare for “all scenarios.” Among those precautions is an extension of the federal mask mandate that requires face coverings on airplanes, in airports and on public transit. According to the statement, fines range from $500 to $3,000 for repeat offenders. The order is in place until March 18.
