Every immigrant comes to the United States with a dream. It is not until they arrive in the United States and discover the endless opportunities the country has to offer that they discover their full potential. The United States has a foundation that can be utilized to achieve the American Dream. Let’s take a look at some famous immigrants who truly changed the United States.

Madeleine Albright

Madeleine Albright was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In 1948, Albright and her family immigrated to the U.S. after the Czechoslovak coup d’etat. She became a U.S. citizen in 1957. In 1993, Bill Clinton appointed Albright as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. In 1997, Albright was the first woman to be appointed as United States Secretary of State. Albright left a significant impact as she passionately advocated for democracy across the world, and vouched for the expansion of NATO to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. Albright paved the way for women in leadership, with Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton, who served the role of U.S. Secretary of State later on. In May of 2012, former President Barack Obama awarded Albright with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Sergey Brin

Sergey Brin was born in 1973 in Moscow, Soviet Union (now Russia). Brin and his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1979 to flee from Jewish persecution. He attended the University of Maryland and received a BA in computer science and mathematics as well as an M.S. from Stanford University in 1995. While studying at Stanford, he met Larry Page, whom he developed the most popular search engine to exist, Google. The two headquartered their research project in California. In 2004, the company went public and the rest was history. Since then, Google has rapidly grown beyond just a search engine, and offers email, navigation, video sharing, translation, and more. Brin is one of the richest men in the world, with a current net worth of 83.8 billion.

Arianna Huffington

Arianna Huffington was born in Athens, Greece. She attended Girton College of the University of Cambridge and studied abroad in India. Huffington moved to the U.S. in 1980 with strong ambitions of merging into society and networking with some of New York’s elites. Beginning in the early 1990s, she was a political commentator with conservative views. After a few years, Huffington expanded her views and has since associated herself with liberal perspectives. She also ran for governor of California in 2003. Huffington co-founded the popular news aggregator and blog, The Huffington Post (now known as HuffPost) in 2005. Since, The Huffington Post has won multiple awards, including the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in 2012. Huffington has been named one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People and was listed on the Forbes World’s Most Powerful Women in 2021. Huffington has since left The Huffington Post, and has started a new digital platform called Thrive Global.

Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany in 1879. He is best known for being the creator of the theory of relativity. Einstein won the 1921 Nobel Prize. What many people don’t know is that Einstein tried to emigrate to the United States multiple times; U.S. immigration agents denied several of his applications. His persistence paid off, though, and eventually, he obtained a visa to enter the United States. Einstein proved to be a crucial asset in World War II.

Mila Kunis
